  5. Rei Kawakubo, born in Tokyo in 1942, studied fine arts and literature before venturing into fashion. Unlike many designers, she had no formal training in fashion design, which allowed her to approach clothing with a fresh, unconventional perspective. In 1969, she founded Comme des Garcons as a women’s ready-to-wear label, and by the 1970s, she had opened her first boutique in Tokyo.

The brand gained international recognition in 1981 when Kawakubo debuted her collection in Paris. Her all-black, deconstructed garments—often featuring asymmetrical cuts, frayed edges, and oversized shapes—were dubbed "Hiroshima Chic" by critics, who were both shocked and intrigued by her radical departure from traditional Western fashion. Despite initial controversy, Comme des Garçons quickly became a cult favorite among fashion insiders.
